From 11th – 20th October 2013 an European Seminar of Youth in Action, organized by the NGO Solidarity Tracks took place in Lefkada.

Young people from 13 European countries, including Eastern Europe and the region of Caucasus, participated in the sense of gaining more knowledge in the area of entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Young leaders and young people´s educators could exchange views, experiences and “good practices” and develop skills & competences related to the young people’s education in the sustainable entrepreneurship. One part of the course was the invention of new sustainable businesses in Lefkada which were presented as small scenes by using the “origami” technique for an exhibition in the open theater.

As some experts presented the theoretical part of the course, people could improve their background information about sustainability as well as entrepreneurship. All of the participants also represented their country and the importance and meaning of sustainability there. Good practices were presented and many new ideas were shared. Also the intercultural exchange was one of the main purposes of the seminar in order to connect people and businesses. Not all of the participants already had worked in the entrepreneurship field so the group was made of mixed experienced and unexperienced people. One of the difficulties for sure was to understand the meaning of sustainability and of entrepreneurship because both topics were huge and were connected in this training course. Throughout a lot of practicing, discussions, team work and an exhibition people could have their own ideas for good practices.

In order to create new business ideas for the community in our island via Origami, the group of young people did an excursion to several places in Lefkada. The task was to visit touristic places as well as rural villages with a different point of view than random tourists. The target was to think of the advantages and disadvantages of each location and to find possibilities of green businesses in these locations.

The first visit was the local supermarket where they could see a good example of consumption on local levels. All products which are produced in Lefkada are available. Next the wine factory of ΤΑΟΛ at Kastro was visited, where it was visible how wine is produced.

After that, Karia was a rather different place to see. This is a small Greek village, not affected too much by the touristic activities, which means that here the real everyday life of locals still exists. After Karia a small village called Eglouvi was visited by the group. Some local people gave the information that these days there are living only 40 people. As they told that in this region it snows in winter, people from the course had to think about businesses and possibilities to bring tourists or business in a rural region like this.

The following stop was in Nydri to see the Eco House, built up by volunteers from Solidarity Tracks. The visit also included the Eco Garden about which some of the volunteers gave details and facts about the construction and project of the Eco house and Eco- gardening.

Also in the sense to taste local products and to understand the importance of local production the lunch was held in Vlicho where people could try some traditional Greek food. In Nydri, later on, it was time to explore another very different small village on the Eastern coast of Lefkada. Mostly there people had ideas to create businesses linked with boats, the sea or some outdoor activities such as water sports.

Back in Lefkada the group of young people went for a walk through the city and and got some historical introduction about Lefkada from Thanos, a local citizen. He stressed out some basic background information about the history of Lefkada, famous people and myths. Additionally the group also entered into the cultural museum of Orfeas.

Later on the ideas were presented and last but not least the Youth created their Origami scene for the exhibition. There were a variety of new projects, for instance a dolphin rescue center, biological farms or mountain sport activities.

To conclude people could not only refresh, increase and strengthen their own knowledge, they also were reminded about the importance of green businesses and of the future prospect of possibilities to change situations which harm the environment. Apart from that many positive inventions for the local community in Lefkada have been created throughout that training course.

written by Elisabeth Daniela Weissitsch

Από
